Higher Heating Fuel Bills Expected This Winter

Vioxx Lawsuit News Update

On September 30, 2004, Merck announced a worldwide withdrawal of its anti-inflammatory drug, VIOXX(r), following information that people taking VIOXX(r) are two times more likely to have heart attacks and strokes than people who take other inflammatory drugs, such as Naproxen(r).

FTC Seeks to Halt Illegal Spyware Operation
Lure of Anonymous File Sharing Software Exposed Consumers’ Computers to Spyware
The Federal Trade Commission has asked a U.S. District Court judge to halt an operation that secretly installed spyware and adware that could not be uninstalled by the consumers whose computers it infected. The defendants used the lure of free software they claimed would make peer-to-peer file sharing anonymous. The agency alleges the stealthy downloads violate federal law and asked the court to order a permanent halt to them.

FDA Plans Public Hearing on Communication of Drug Safety Information

Mortgage Company Settles Information Security Charges
FTC Alleges Customer Data Was Not Secure
Superior Mortgage Corp., a lender with 40 branch offices in 10 states and multiple Web sites, has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it violated federal law by failing to provide reasonable security for sensitive customer data and falsely claiming that it encrypted data submitted online. The settlement bars future deceptive claims and requires the company to establish data security procedures that will be reviewed by independent third-party auditors for 10 years.

NHTSA Releases List of Model Year 2006 Vehicles For
Consumer safety ratings will be issued for a wide selection of 2006 model passenger vehicles, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced today.
For model year 2006, a total of 41 passenger cars, 21 sport utility vehicles, five vans, and 10 pickups will be subjected to frontal and side crash safety tests. When the tests are completed by the spring of 2006, consumers will have access to frontal crash test ratings for about 83 percent of all 2006 offerings and side impact safety information for about 69 percent.
